NPHL has moved to an electronic ordering system, NUlirt, and it is now the preferred method to order all tests. Once ordered, print a "batch list" (see NUlirt Guide).

Forms Required - Nulirt batch list or NPHL Test Request Form (completed in entirety) must accompany the specimen to include the following information: symptoms and date of onset, pregnancy status, travel and vaccine history. Testing will not be performed without all required information.

Test: Yersinia Culture  
Synonym: Yersinia associated diarrhea 
Method: Standard reference procedures for Yersinia culture and identification  
Availability: Daily; final negative report at 2 days, positives called as soon as detected  
Specimen: Preserve stool in maintenance media (Cary-Blair or Enteric Plus) immediately  
Collection Device: Sterile stool container with maintenance media
Specimen Labeling: Test subject to CLIA regulations and required 2 patient identifiers on specimen container and requisition forms  
Volume: 10.0 mL stool in maintenance media  
Storage/Transport: Prior to and during shipment: Ambient 15-25°C
Shipping instructions, including specimen-handling requirements during transport:
All screw-top tubes must be sealed with parafilm or tape.
Package and ship as UN3373 Category B, Biological Substance. Place in biohazard bag with absorbent material. Transport by NPHL ground courier (NPHL brown shipper not required). If courier not available, contact Client Services (866) 290-1406 to arrange pickup.

Unacceptable: Nonsterile or leaking container, multiple specimens in 24 hour period, dry specimens, diapers, or delayed transport to lab in inappropriate preservative  
Specimen Stability: Ambient 15-25°C for 72 h  
Reference Interval: Culture negative for Yersinia spp.  
Reportable Disease: Positive result should be immediately reported to local and state health department and isolates should be forwarded to the NPHL, refer to Nebraska DHHS Title 173, Communicable Diseases

Indicate suspected organisms and available patient history, especially any recent travels, on the test request form. Maintenance media is available from Client Services.
